One week out of each year The Balvenie shuts down to use the malt floors to produce a peated whisky using 100% peated barley. This has been taking place since 2002, resulting in this 14 year old peated whisky matured exclusively in American oak casks. The Balvenie Peat Week 14 has a hearty helping of rich smoke, but is much more delicate than the Islay whiskies such as Lagavulin and Caol Ila. This is due to the use of highland peat.
This is a highly enjoyable dram and may make you rethink Islay whiskies which are total peat monsters. We still love our Islay whiskies but this is a different world.
